Set in the heart of West Clare, Doonbeg is a charming coastal village with much to offer the holidaymaker. From world-class golf to dazzling beaches and inspiring drama and music festivals, Doonbeg has something for everyone.
The world-famous golf course at Doonbeg is the work of two-time British Open Champion Greg Norman. Covering 1.5 miles of curving beach and towering sand dunes, the course overlooks the wild Atlantic Ocean from the green, the fairway, and the tee of 16 of the 18 holes. Variations in wind speed and direction mean you will never play Doonbeg the same way twice.
The White Strand, Killard, is the perfect beach for a family day out. Sheltered from the prevailing winds, the sandy beach slopes gradually to low water and is flanked by protective rocky cliffs. . The beach holds blue flag status. Other quality beaches in the Doonbeg area include Doughbeg Beach, Doughmore Beach, Clogher Strand and Lough Donnell, The Hubans, Baltard Cliffs, The Horseshoe, and Donegal Point.
Established in 1952, the West Clare Drama Festival takes place in Doonbeg every March. A three-act drama festival, it runs over 11 nights, with productions staged nightly in the parish hall. The event awards points for drama groups seeking to qualify for the All Ireland Finals in their respective categories, and the varied programme is always of a very high standard.
Doonbeg Seafood Festival take places place in July, reflecting the long-standing tradition of fishing in Doonbeg and the focus on seafood in the local restaurants. Events include a Queen of the Sea competition, currach racing, a vintage rally, and children’s activities.
The Shannon estuary is home to the only resident group of bottlenose dolphins in Ireland, and the west Clare peninsula, which overlooks the northern shore of the estuary is a prime spot for observing them. More than 100 dolphins have been identified using the estuary at various times. Dolphin-watching boat trips leave from Kilrush and Carrigaholt.
Doonbeg Ocean Evolution offers guided kayaking trips down the Shannon River into the beautiful Doonbeg Bay and along the safe beaches nearby. This is a fun activity for all the family, with tandem kayaks provided if desired. Wetsuits, life jackets and helmets are supplied. Both small groups and individuals are catered for.
Several walking trails have been developed in the Doonbeg area in conjunction with Discover Ireland & Slí na Slainte. These include the 8km Doonbeg Loop, the 20km Tullaher Loop, and an 8.6km Slí na Slainte walk.
The annual Doonbeg Currach Regatta is held on the Monday of the August bank holiday weekend at Doonbeg pier. Races include 3 Hand, Fear & Bean, U18, Naomhog, and Parish. A bouncy castle and refreshments are provided on site.
Lying about a mile off the Clare coast, Scattery Island is home to a monastic settlement founded in the early 6th century by St. Senan. The island features the remains of six churches and one of Ireland’s tallest round towers (120 feet). Another noteworthy feature of the tower is that the door is at ground level. Scattery has endured numerous invasions, including Viking raids in the early 9th century, which Brian Boru later repelled. Boat trips depart from Kilrush Marina (12km from Doonbeg) during the summer season.
Set among 420 acres of native woodland, the 2-acre Vandeleur Walled Garden is surrounded by beautiful, old stone walls. Originally part of the Vandeleur Family Demesne, this garden has been restored around the old path system with a horizontal maze, interesting water features, and a functioning Victorian-style greenhouse open to visitors. The garden cultivates a number of rare and tender plants, which thrive in the region’s unusually mild microclimate.
