Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
No international city equals Dublin for excellent golf courses. With immaculate parklands, peerless links, and some glittering gems in between, the area around Ireland's capital offers an exciting mix, from the Dublin Mountains down to the Irish Sea.
The Island Golf Club in Donabate (15 minutes from Dublin Airport) is an exceptional links course, backed by the highest dunes of any course in Ireland, which create natural amphitheatres for many holes. The par-71, 6,312-metre course has a wild and natural feel, with its most recent design changes coming from Martin Hawtree. It has hosted championships including the Irish P.G.A. tournament. The signature hole is the long par-3 13th, measuring over 200 metres.
A colourful setting and a card-destroying series of holes from the 12th to the 14th ("Ireland's Amen Corner") inevitably invites comparison between Druid's Glen and the Augusta National. Set south of Dublin, in County Wicklow, Druid’s Glen was designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, immediately attracting the attention of the PGA, who chose it for 3 consecutive Irish Open championships, from 1996. If you stick to the extensive, manicured fairways, you can score high.
Host of the 2005 Irish Open, the Colin Montgomerie course at Carton House looks and feels like a links course, whereas the Mark O'Meara course is park-like. The Montgomerie course is a straightforward driver's course, stretching to a massive 6,675 metres from the championship tees, with no signature hole, but it offers a succession of consistently good holes (especially the par-3's). Located 24 km west of Dublin city, Carton House Golf Club offers exceptional facilities.
Off the scale when it comes to opulence, the K Club is set among 550 acres of rolling Kildare countryside and hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006. Take care choosing your teeing area on the (Arnold) Palmer course, as it stretches an eye-popping 6,700 metres from the blues, a par of 72. The 16th is an intimidating par-5, but the 7th is even harder - a stroke index one par 4, measuring 393 metres from the tips. Host of the Smurfit European Open, the Smurfit Course offers a distinctive "inland links" design, with a mix of doglegs taking you to the signature 7th hole.
Established in 1894 and home to 19 Irish Opens and a raft of other high-profile tournaments, Portmarnock Golf Club offers quite simply one of the top links courses in the world. The championship course is renowned for its strategically located sod-wall pot bunkers, and the variable Atlantic winds add further challenges. It is best known for its testing series of finishing holes, with Arnold Palmer even calling the 15th hole "the finest par-3 in the world."
