Lisdoonvarna is a spa town in north County Clare, between Ennistymon and Ballyvaughan. Situated in the stunning Burren region it is best known for its matchmaking festival and for the quality of its traditional music.
Lisdoonvarna has been synonymous with matchmaking for centuries, with September being the peak month for bachelor farmers seeking wives once the harvest was safely in. Nowadays, little official matchmaking goes on at the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival in September, but it has evolved into Europe’s biggest singles event.
Clare is a hotbed of traditional Irish music with towns like Doolin, Kilfenora, Ballyvaughan, Miltown Malbay, and Ennis earning plaudits worldwide for the quality of music on offer, and Lisdoonvarna is no exception. The best place to hear live, informal sessions is the local pub.
The Burren Smokehouse has been demonstrating traditional methods of smoking locally caught fish and other gourmet products since 1995. Now a popular tourist attraction in the North County Clare area, it receives more than 30,000 visitors from all over the world every year.
Lisdoonvarna's famous Victorian Spa Complex and Health Centre is the only active spa centre in Ireland. Containing magnesium, iodine, and iron, its waters are believed to have therapeutic effects on those who bathe in them. Continuing a spa tradition that has continued in Lisdoonvarna since the 18th century, the centre offers sulphur baths, massage and saunas.

The most intact and authentic medieval castle in Ireland, Bunratty Castle was built in 1425 and faithfully refurbished in 1954. Wall hangings and furnishings recreate the atmosphere and setting of the times. The Folk Park is set among 26 acres and recreates a 19th-century Irish village with eight farmhouses, a watermill, blacksmith’s forge, Macs pub and restaurant, and a collection of 19th-century agricultural machinery.
The iconic Cliffs of Moher need no introduction. Situated just 4km from Lisdoonvarna on the coast of West Clare they form a spectacular barrier against the powerful Atlantic, rising to more than 215 metres in places and extending along the coastline for nearly 8km.
For deep-sea fishing, boats leave from the harbour in Liscannor, a 15-minute drive south of Lisdoonvarna. Rock fishing is popular along the coast roads between Fanore and Ballyvaughan. You can also fish from the pier in Doolin. Lickeen Lake is the Burren’s most popular fishing lake, and fly-fishing in nearby Lake Inchiquin also yields results.
