With beaches, mountains, lakes, and dolmens scattered throughout, Waterford has a wealth of great attractions, to make your family holiday healthy, exciting, and incredibly good value. In fact, Waterford offers more family fun than you will fit in.
Channel your child’s inner knight or princess with a trip to a castle. The incredibly impressive Lismore Castle is not open to the public, but its spectacular gardens are in summer, as is the art gallery in the west wing of the castle. Nearby you’ll find Ballysaggartmore Towers, Gothic-style buildings in leafy woodlands, straight out of a fairytale. Built in 1834 for Anglo-Irish landlord Arthur Keily-Ussher, the ornate lodges were intended to introduce an extravagant mansion that Keily-Ussher ran out of money to build.
Take in the dramatic coastal stretch west of Tramore with a drive along the Copper Coast, so called because of the local tradition of copper mining. You’ll pass through the towns of Fenor, Annestown, Bunmahon, and the award-winning Stradbally. Fenor is home to a forest, lakes, and bog, and there are beaches at Kilfarrasy, Annestown, and Bunmahon. Take a detour to the village of Dunhill for good food and traditional music.
Set at the water’s edge in Dunmore Harbour, Dunmore East Adventure Centre is a well known base for sailing, stand-up paddle-boarding, and other watersports, as well as being a popular holiday resort and a magnet for children’s summer camps. There are land- and water-based outdoor activities for all abilities and ages, as well as week-long summer camps during July and August for 5 to 17 year olds.
A multiple-award-winning, all-weather visitor attraction, the Waterford Museum of Treasures incorporates three museums showcasing more than a millennium of history. Reginald’s Tower houses the Viking treasures of Waterford, the Medieval Museum displays its medieval artefacts, and the Bishop’s Palace brings visitors on a journey to Georgian Waterford. Kids will love the character-led tours through the so-called Viking Triangle, which involve teams of actors playing different characters in imaginative recreations of Waterford’s fascinating history.
One of the southeast’s best indoor family entertainment centres is Waterford Bowl & Kidzone in Williamstown. It offers ten-pin bowling in refurbished, fully computerised lanes, and a new cutting-edge amusements arcade. There are bumpers for smaller children and full disabled access, in addition to wheelchair-friendly bowling chutes. Smaller bowlers will appreciate the
