Hi, my name is Caragh. It's my responsibility to ensure that all our customers have a great rental experience on PlacesToStay.com. My favourite place to stay in Ireland is Dingle!
Site of the ancient kingdom of Mide (meaning “middle,” for its location in the country), Westmeath is a playground for those who love lakes and rivers. Enjoy fishing, boating, and walking in a pleasant setting within easy reach of just about everywhere in Ireland.
Belvedere House and Gardens is a superbly restored Georgian hunting and fishing lodge set among 160 acres of parkland. It was once home to Earl Robert Rochfort, notorious for locking up his second wife for 31 years following accusations of adultery. The estate hosts events throughout the year. It is also home to Ireland’s largest man-made folly - the Jealous Wall.
Home to the Earls of Longford for more than 350 years, Tullynally Castle was originally designed as a Georgian mansion, and later became a Gothic revival castle. Guided tours cover the unique collection of furniture and pictures, the Victorian kitchen and laundries, and the intricate collection of gardens.
Following an ambitious restoration project, the state-of-the-art interactive visitor centre at Athlone Castle offers eight galleries, each showcasing various aspects of life in Athlone down through history. Built for King John of England by his Irish Justiciar Bishop John De Gray of Norwich, Athlone Castle still displays features of its 1210 origins, as well as various additions introduced as warfare techniques progressed.
Lough Lene, between the villages of Collinstown and Castlepollard, is a jewel of a lake for trout fishing. The pristine water offers challenging but rewarding fishing, with a natural head of wild brown trout supplemented by the local angling club with brown and rainbow trout. Other excellent fishing grounds in the region include Lough Ree, Lough Ennell, Lough Owel, and Lough Sheelin.
The Lough Ennell area inspired Jonathan Swift to write Gulliver's Travels (1726), hence Jonathan Swift Park. Located 10km south of Mullingar on the N52, the park offers a par-3 golf course overlooking the lake, a seasonal coffee shop, boat moorings, trout fishing, swimming, woodland walks, and a children's play area.
Founded in 1757, Locke's Distillery in Kilbeggan is thought to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Readily available turf, locally grown grain, and pure water from the Brusna River combine to make it the ideal location for a whiskey still. Guided tours are available, with an opportunity to sample the finished product.
Fore Abbey is the old Benedictine Abbey ruin, situated to the north of Lough Lene, associated with what locals call “seven wonders,” including a lintel stone allegedly raised by St. Fechin’s prayers and water that flows uphill.
An award-winning village straddling the Offaly-Westmeath border, Ballinahown is a picturesque hamlet steeped in history and creativity. Irish contemporary craft and design is showcased in the design village, with artists and craftspeople displaying their works in the Core Crafted Design centre and Celtic Roots Studio.
Ireland's oldest festival takes place at the Hill of Uisneach, the ancient seat of the High Kings. The Festival of the Fires was not celebrated in 2013, to allow the sacred and historic hill an opportunity to recover, with a series of summer gatherings in the shadow of Uisneach organised to celebrate the Bealtaine (May) festival instead.
Though a victim of appalling weather on two recent occasions, the Mullingar Show has been supporting local agriculture and country life since the 19th century. Held in July, it has a particularly strong tradition of horse, pony, and sheep showing and classes in pedigree and commercial cattle. Horticulture, cookery, arts, crafts, and photography are also well represented.
