Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
The Cork seaport of Youghal, at the mouth of the River Blackwater, has history seeping out of its ancient walls, and it really knows how to showcase it. Enjoy a fascinating heritage trail or take to the water - whatever you do, you won’t be short of reasons to stay in Youghal.
As one of the best-preserved examples of a 13th-century town in Europe, Youghal has been designated a Heritage Town, and there is certainly much to discover here. The walled town is home to a fascinating array of ancient buildings, from almshouses to castles and priories to grand homes (Sir Walter Raleigh’s Myrtle Grove is here).
Discover the fascinating history of a town that has been visited by everyone from Oliver Cromwell to Walter Raleigh (and possibly even William Shakespeare) on the Youghal Heritage Trail. The hour-long walk takes in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, the Clock Gate, almshouses, and Tynte’s Castle, among other historic attractions.
Built on the site of wooden chapel dating from 450 A.D., St. Mary’s Collegiate Church was built in 1220 and renovated in the 1600s by Sir Richard Boyle, who built a lavish monument depicting himself, his two wives, and several of his 16 children. Items of note include numerous Masonic symbols (Youghal has one of Ireland’s oldest Masonic lodges), oak-tree roof trusses, and Oliver Cromwell’s chest.
Youghal is home to some beautiful beaches, from Claycastle to the Front Strand and Redbarn, and now it is even easier to appreciate them. A fine boardwalk has been constructed as part of the National Coastal Walking route, improving access for those with prams, wheelchairs, or difficulty walking through sand.
Drive 16km from Youghal to discover a delightful expanse of established woodland at Castlemartyr. Castlemartyr Woods are home to two looped trails - the Pigeon Loop and Mitchell Loop - the names of which refer to the time when the woods were part of an estate divided into various tracts.
With its secluded shores and pristine waters, Youghal Bay is heaven for sea anglers. Knockadoon Head has excellent spinning or float fishing for pollock, mackerel, wrasse, conger, and dogfish. Pitch up at Youghal Strand for surf and bottom fishing for flounder, plaice, dabs, and sole.
The movie adaptation of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick was filmed in Youghal, which has started to commemorate the event with a Moby Dick Festival. The weekend of events includes literary workshops, family activities, street music, and a sea creatures’ parade.
Named for the roar of the swollen river Dissour in winter, Glenbower (gleann-bodhar, or “deafening glen”) is a picturesque oasis near Youghal, in the village of Killeagh. Short trails lead through the natural woodland setting.
Nip across the border to Waterford for the cliff walk above Ardmore, an award-winning village 5 km from Youghal. Fill your lungs with bracing sea air as you enjoy the scenery around Ram Head, the ruins of St Declan’s Church, and the view of Ardmore’s Round Tower set against the Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains.
For a special treat on a rainy day, you can’t beat a visit to Perks, one of Ireland’s largest indoor funfair entertainment centres. Enjoy a huge variety of rides, games, and attractions, as well as the Showboat Casino. There’s more than 70,000sq ft of indoor entertainment here, so there’s plenty to suit even the fussiest child.
